Effective distance education course design employs a variety of tasks, interactions, and ongoing assessment to provide many opportunities for engagement in synchronous and asynchronous formats. Whether a DL course is being newly created or adapted from an existing classroom course, instructors should always begin with reflecting on the course’s learning objectives and then thinking about what experiences will guide student learning and what formative and summative assessments will measure success in meeting the learning objectives in a distance education format. The Teaching and Learning Resource Center’s article, Creating and Adapting Assignments for Online Courses, discusses some of the important consideration when choosing what assignments and assessments are appropriate for a particular online course.
